Limitless Custom Staircases With a World of Possibilities
To begin the discovery of your perfect staircase, visit our library of staircase pictures where you'll find many different styles, ranging from simple staircases to elaborate, classic freestanding curved stairs and even modern mono stringer staircases. You will also find styles that range from Grand Staircases to Monumental Stairs, dressed with everything from historic architectural hand railing to modern handrail systems - and everything in between. Stairsmiths has also developed an ultra-custom double helix spiral staircase as an alternative to traditional spiral staircases. This type of spiral staircase is a curved staircase instead of a "traditional" spiral stair. Visit our Custom Staircase Designs section for more information on how we build the double helix spiral staircase.
Custom Hardwood Staircases
Our state of the art shop allows us to create your custom stair parts from any species of wood, including mahogany, walnut, ash, maple, cherry, cedar, and oak. Browse our vast collection of wood species pictures, and if you don't see the one you want, call us and ask if it is available!
Finding Ipe Stairs, Ipe Stair Parts and a shop willing to make them is difficult. We will gladly make your Ipe Stair Parts or Ipe Staircase for you. We focus on providing staircase solutions that perfectly match your needs and desires. We strive to ensure every stair part is made to the highest quality standards in every way. Every stair part is turned or milled with strict attention to detail. We take extreme pride in our staircases, and hope that you will too.
Custom Wrought Iron Staircases
Do you prefer hand forged wrought iron? Our custom stair parts are available in hand forged wrought iron including balusters, newels, custom iron panels and custom spiral stairs. Stairsmiths employs our own blacksmith, who works in an “old school” technique and is able to hand forge any design that you can dream up. With over thirty years in his trade, he is very experienced in hand forging different materials, including hand forged brass to make brass handrails. Check out our blacksmith section for more details.
For a more ready-made type of wrought iron baluster or newel, we offer the Italian line. The Italian line of wrought iron balusters we offer uses the highest quality wrought iron available. This line of wrought iron balusters and wrought iron newels offers a more economic staircase solution.
The handrail forms the top of the balustrade (the framework of rail, newels and balusters) that follows the pitch of the staircase. Our custom curved stair handrails are built from the finest quality hardwoods with unsurpassed craftsmanship for the ultimate in appearance, stability and durability. While others may create curved handrails with finger joints or bending rail, we do not. If we did, we would be committing a sin! Our custom handrails are built out of thick, solid materials. This gives our wreathed handrails, tangent handrails and curved handrails a much more uniform and beautiful finish. Stairsmiths is the only stair company in the United States that makes and uses both tangent handrails and wreathed handrails as a standard. This method was developed in England nearly three hundred years ago. Check out our Custom Stair Parts section for more information.
Custom Stair Parts – The Balusters
Balusters are the vertical sections placed between the curved handrails and the stair treads. These stair parts come standard as square top or pin top, in lengths from 34” to 42”. We offer custom balusters in many blank styles, including plain, fluted, round, octagon, reeded, carved and twisted. Each custom baluster is hand built for your specific curved staircase with a strict attention to detail and installed ready to be stained or painted. Custom baluster turnings, of various lengths and species are available upon request.
Custom Stair Parts – The Newels
Newels provide the main support for the handrail system, wherever they are needed, throughout the curved staircase. Newels come in a variety of different lengths. Browse our fine selection of custom newels and custom box newels. We can even build your custom newels to your specifications.
Custom Stair Parts – The Treads
The Stair treads, are the horizontal part of a curved staircase upon which the foot is placed. Our stair treads are hand built from only the finest natural hardwood of your choice to provide support and durability for your staircase
